Additional Rule

As an additional rule your team is required to implement one of the following three options into the game. The main goal of this rule is to promote imagination. The most clever and imaginative implementation of one of these options will get more votes when the winner is chosen.

1. In Memoriam Douglas Adams

Douglas Adams was the author of one of the funniest and most imaginative books ever written: "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy". He has died the 11th of May of a heart attack. Since then, he is remembered and honoured on the internet in a lot of different ways. Contribute to this by featuring him or his work in some way in your game. You can find a lot of info on the internet. Examples: put popular dialogs from his books somewhere in the game, or make characters from his books show up somewhere, etc.

2. Molecular Biology as a lifestyle

In everyday life I study molecular biology. This is a very interesting field in science that involves stuff like DNA, proteins, cells, cloning, xenobiology, radioactive probing, genetic manipulation, frankenstein food, mutation, and more fun stuff. Feature one aspact of molecular biology in your game. This could take on many forms like: a picture of a DNA helix in the background, genetically manipulated mutants as enemies, or the main character is actually a clone.

3. It's a small world after all

One of the nice things of the allegro community is that there are people from literally all over the world. The entrants in this competition come from places like Canada, France, Spain, New Zealand, etc. Make sure your game is suited for people from many different countries. You could, for example, implement multiple language support. Or you could put symbols of many different countries in the game to please people from different countries (for example, I would be very pleased with a game that features windmills and wooden shoes)

Remember: You only have to implement one of these three options in the game. Good luck and have fun!

General Rules

Here are the basic Rules for the team compo.

  1. Only teams consisting of at least three people from different countries can participate. This is to exclude teams of people that live close to eachother, because they will have advantage. This doesn't mean that people that live in the same country can't be in your team. This is not a problem, as long as there are two other people from different countries. There is no maximum team size.
  2. The competition will be from Friday June 29th, 0.00 hours GMT to Monday July 2nd, 24.00 hours GMT. This is the only time you actually may write code and design graphics and sound. On the other hand, you can start planning the game way before this date. Also you can write header files not containing only prototypes and definitions before this date.
  3. There will be no genre limits. This makes planning in advance possible, and this is really necessary for team projects. The entry must be some kind of game, and it must make use of the Allegro library.
  4. A project plan must be submitted before the start of the competition. In the plan there must be a rough distribution of task amoungst the team members. These plans will be submitted to me and are made publicly available just after the start of the compo, so you can't steal eachothers ideas.
  5. There will be some artistic requirements, just like in speedhack. These requirements will be something like: put the number 29 somewhere, or: the game must feature a donkey and an advertisement. This is to add some kind of randomness to the competition, and also to promote originality. The artistic requirements will be announced just before the compo starts on the allegro competition mailing list and on this webpage.
  6. There is no size limit to your entry.
  7. The teams must provide the full source code, including the source code of add-on libraries used. You don't need to provide the source code to the allegro library of course.
  8. The game code must be written from scratch. You may use any add-on library that is available on the internet at least a month before the start of the competition. You must say what data (sound, graphics) was created by the team, and what was not. If it wasn't, you must declare where you got it from. This will of course be weighed into the final voting process.
  9. determining the winner will go like this: Each team gets to choose a first, second and third place for the following four categories: 1. sourcecode, 2. artistical (including graphics, music and artistic requirements), 3. gameplay, and 4. technical (smart AI, clever game physics). Team's are not allowed to vote for their own game. There will be no prizes unless I find some sponsors (-:

more information on voting

First I will explain the four categories in more detail:

category 1. sourcecode. When you work together in a team, it is important to write clear and understandable sourcecode, so other team members are able to understand it too. Sourcecode should be easy to understand and well structured.

category 2. originality. This category includes the best designed graphics, sound, and the most original implementation of one of the three extra rules.

category 3. gameplay. Which game is the most fun to play?

category 4. technical. Which game is technically most advanced, has the smartest AI or the cleverest game physics?

For each category you have to say which game is according to you the first, second and third best, not including your own team. That means you are not allowed to vote for your own team. You can send your vote to me by e-mail. Only people who participated in the competition are allowed to vote.

Each team gets a single vote. That means if three people from a single team send their votes to me, each vote counts for one third.

If you want to make more detailed comments on the games you are welcome to do so. I think the best way to do that is by posting them in allegro.cc forums.
