Introduction

Welcome to the website of TINS. TINS is a wacky game programming competition for users of the Allegro game programming library. The goal of the competition is to create a complete game from scratch in a single weekend. This competition will be held from Friday November 21 to Monday November 24, 2003.

The Allegro community has a rich histrory of wacky competitions like for example Speedhack. Speedhack is a similar one-weekend competition and is held semi-anually. For some people this is not often enough. That's why I just organize another one more or less halfway in-between. However this competition is organized by me and not by the original Speedhack organizer. Therefore, TINS Is Not Speedhack.

There is one other important rule: the game must somehow make use of the Allegro game programming library. See the rules section for more details. Don't think of this rule as a limitation: Allegro is portable, easy to learn and easy to set up. It takes care of low-level stuff so you can focus on the actual design of the game and don't have to worry about hardware interfaces.

To promote originality, and to prevent people from writing their entry already before the competition starts, there will be a couple of extra rules that are presented on this website just before the competition starts. These rules come in four categories: Genre Requirements, Technical requirements, Artistic requirements and Bonus rules. These rules are generated at random by a magical device named the Rule-O-Matic. It is possible that you have an idea of what to make, but that this idea is not compatible with the rules. You should have a couple of ideas lined up, and implement the one that fits the rules best. But don't be afraid to interpret the extra requirements to the widest extent possible. This competition is supposed to be fun, and we won't be nitpicking about it afterwards.

After the competition is over, the entries will be reviewed and points will be awarded through a peer-review system. Based on the points, winners will be announced in several categories. Other than the honour and respect you get from fellow hackers, there is no prize.
