I'm starting in the right place. The map editor is coming along fine. Right now its just got some basic functionality but it will be extended as I go along.

3 March, 0946 (GMT +8)

We've decided it shall be a platformer, and we have an idea of how to integrate the railway and ascii requirements, but little else. Both our lead developer (me) and our producer (her) are at work at the moment, so very little development will take place until after 1600 local time...
Deathlord 17:36, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Hmm time to log our progress a little...
The framework of the game is set up and we are currently working on some parts of the engine and some base classes.

But now it's time to get some new junk food as the work is really consuming a lot of energy ;)
NewCreature 17:35, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I'm on my lunch break. Just checked the rules so I can be working on my ideas while at work :)
FalseMasterJ 17:13, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I'm finished with the intro screen to "Train Master".
*srunk for you convenience*
Graue 17:07, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Crud! I didn't know TINS was starting today, I thought it started tomorrow. I'm totally unprepared. Oh well, better get to work, then.
Marcello 16:34, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Well, got up, and read rules, browsed logs. I find it amusing that people are so concerned about getting the maximum time out of this contest. Let me tell you that it doesn't help, sleep is much better for you.

I have school and work today, so I won't really start for another... Since I never start till saturday anyway, it should be cool. I have another...7 hours or so until I can start. Not to mention I have some exams to study for next week. =P

Good luck to all of you.
ahuillet 16:31, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
What you see here : player, and its crosshair.

Yeah, that's a lot of black ... :)
Tigge 16:20, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I think I got a basic idea that should work and sounds fun.

* The goal of the game is to let a train pass from the start of the track until the end. The problem is that the track could miss certain parts or perhaps some track switches are set the wrong way. (Artistic requirement)

* After a certain amount of time the train starts to move. If you are not done placing your tiles you are in trouble (Genre requirement)

* An in game help can be brought up at any time this will contain ASCII-art to get the player to understand. (Technical requrements)

Here is a little idea of what the game _could_ look like:
Niunio 15:54, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
The rules of the puzzle written. They're simple, very simple, just like the best puzzles (Tetris, Puyo-puyo, Pipe-mania...).
HopeDagger 15:33, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Phew, finally awake. Stupid time zones. ;)

I've got the design of my game done, in a nutshell. Feels a little ambitious, but hopefully I can hack it together before the 72 hours are up.

Here's the rough game design I've got:

-> Sidescroller
-> Sprite-to-ASCII realtime converter (low-res sprites into ASCII images)
-> Classic platformer (think Mario, Megaman, etc)
-> If the Time counter runs out, something BAD happens (extra enemies, lose health, spawn boss, etc)
-> Collect clocks throughout the levels to keep the Time up
-> You can use your Time Magic to perform feats at the cost of Time:
-> 100: Bring all enemies down to half speed
-> 200: Summon a 'Time Train' to damage all enemies on the screen
-> 400: Freeze all enemies for 10 seconds
-> 800: Freeze all enemies for 25 seconds
-> 1600: Summon a 'Super Time Train' to destroy all enemies up to 2 screens away

Will it be lame? Yes.
Will it be amusing? Yes.
Will it work? Ideally. :P

First screenshot. No idea yet, but you can draw # chars on the screen (the # are railroad tracks of course).

Edit: Is there a way to reduce my screenshot? I expected it to appear in scaled down form..
FalseMasterJ 15:20, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I have finalize my idea.
you are a master of a train(s), in a city with no automobile roads. instead the entire city has railroad tracks.
Deathlord 14:55, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Now the design phase is finished and we know what the game shall look like in the end.
In the game you drive a train and have to defend yourself against enemies approaching you. The gameplay is action-oriented and contains some strategic elements to make the whole thing more thrilling.
So, stay tuned, now it's coding time. :)
jiifurusu 14:47, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Yay, graphics (mostly) finished :D

I just need to do the ascii-art part... but I'm saving that for later.

Now for the interesting part, if I can get some actual code running!
Darksoll 14:26, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Finished....
Hahahahah, no, just kidding
Niunio 14:24, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I have an idea: a puzzle game wich involves trains. The problem is the "Time" rule because I dont like "time limit" in a game. Hope I find a way for the "Time" rule soon...

Well, I've planned to write the engine today (is very simple) and use the week end for graphics, build levels, test, etc...
jiifurusu 13:44, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Okey, I think I've got the idea for my game. Hopefully I can finish it in time...
Since I'm a fan of builder-games such as Transport Tycoon, this game will also involve building railroads :)
Allefant 13:33, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
muratayik: Yes, as I warned about below :P It's a bug in the log system.. when you reload with ctrl-r or F5 your last post is reposted. So you need to reload by hitting enter in the address bar instead.
muratayik 13:07, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
What the..? When I press F5 my last post is sent again!!
ahuillet 12:58, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I think I've got my idea, now working on the initialization code.

As I thought, I am completely rusty. Forgot everything about main loops and such.

The game will be completely ASCII-art, maybe with color.
Deathlord 12:48, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
So the rules are finally released and work begins. :) First of all, we have to get the game design ready, and then we'll see.

Note that this blog is used for our whole team, ie. Master Lenman and me. If you wish to, also check out www.masterlenman.de for more info.

And most important, I hope we'll all have plenty of fun.
More to come later...
MaxEd 12:46, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
Question #1: How to make train follow the tracks?
Master Lenman 12:43, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
As I work in a team with Deathlord, all our posts will go to his log. Check it out at http://amarillion.bafsoft.net/tins06/msglog.php?user_id=22
As an alternative, you could read our log on my homepage, http://www.masterlenman.de/, where all our messages will be posted, too.
muratayik 12:34, 03 Mar 2006 GMT
I'm not sure, the ASCII art limits not only the possibilities but also the quality. I think I will try barking:) or try to find a trick to meet it.
